AbstractMartha (Marti) Plemmons Fullerton was born on January 13, 1942, in Murphy, N.C. She attending Young Harris College and Florida State University. Fullerton held various positions in the Bowdoin Commission from 1963 to 1999. She also served on the Constitutional Revision Committee and as an aide in the State Senate. Fullerton has also worked in the Lieutenant Governor's office and the Governor's office. In 1998 she was appointed Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Labor by Governor Zell Miller. Fullerton discusses her friendship with Zell Miller, her experience in politics, and her appointment to Labor Commissioner.

Custodial History note

Reflections on Georgia Politics began in the fall of 2006 at Young Harris College, as a lecture and discussion program hosted by Georgia political veteran Bob Short. In late 2007, the Richard B. Russell Library began producing the program as an oral history video series to further illuminate and personalize the tectonic shifts that occurred in Georgia politics in the late twentieth century.

Biographical Note

Martha (Marti) Plemmons Fullerton was born on January 13, 1942, in Murphy, N.C. She attended Young Harris College and Florida State University.

Fullerton held various positions in the Bowdoin Commission from 1963 to 1999. She also served on the Constitutional Revision Committee and as an aide in the State Senate. Fullerton has also worked in the Lieutenant Governor's office and the Governor's office. In 1998 she was appointed Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Labor by Governor Zell Miller.


Scope and Content

Marti Fullerton discusses her early years in Haysville, N.C. She recalls the origins of her interest in politics. Fullerton reflects on working with Zell Miller in the State Senate while at Young Harris and seeing Marvin Griffin speak in 1962.

Fullerton recalls the 1964 congressional race between Miller and Landrum. She comments on Lyndon Johnson's involvement and her work helping to rewrite the state constitution in 1969. Fullerton discusses her work with George T. Smith and attending the 1972 Democratic National Convention in Miami.

Fullerton comments on Lyndon B. Johnson's influence and the role of the 1964 Civil Rights Act on the Republicanization of Georgia. She recalls working for George Busbee's 1974 campaign and subsequently with Zell Miller on his campaign for Lieutenant Governor. Fullerton discusses Miller's gubernatorial campaign and his relationship with Tom Murphy. She discusses James Carville’s approach, the lottery issue, and his promise to serve one term only.

Fullerton recalls her experience as Labor Commissioner and recalls an anecdote about a Governor’s Conference involving Zell Miller.
