Collection Description

Biographical note

Jay Beck grew up in Albany, Georgia, and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia. He served in the Air Force, after which he worked for the Newnan Times Herald for a time. He served in the Carter Administration, alongside childhood friend Hamilton Jordan, and later worked as a financial consultant at the Carter Center for eighteen years until retirement.

Scope and Content

Jay Beck discusses his friendship with Hamilton Jordan, the nephew of Koinonia Farm founder, Clarence Jordan. Beck recalls how Jordan became involved in running the Youth Division of Jimmy Carter’s gubernatorial campaign and subsequently managing his presidential campaign. Beck describes Jordan’s leadership style, personality, and skill in communicating ideas. He also discusses the legacies of the Carter Administration in the White House, which included creating the Department of Energy and Department of Education, setting the future tone for U.S. energy policy, raising interest rates to respond to inflation, and signing the Panama Canal Treaty. Beck also discusses the dynamic political partnership between Jordan and Carter and their success in using the Democratic National Committee platform in training young Democrats, and in mobilizing campaign volunteers in what became known as the “Peanut Brigade.” Beck discusses the nature of the political staff that Carter brought with him to the White House office, such as Jody Powell and Bert Lance. Beck further comments on Jordan’s prescience in advocating for greater inclusion of the South into the Democratic Party, and Carter’s unsuccessful 1980 reelection campaign.
