Abstract: Mary W. Beazley was bonh on November 8, 1929 in Athens, Georgia. She attended the Georgia State College for Women and the University of Georgia. Beazley worked as a staffer for Gov. Vandiver, Lt. Gov. Geer, Gov. Maddox, Gov. Carter, Lt. Gov Miller, Carter's presidential campaign and presidential administration, and Gov. Miller. Beazley discusses her experiences working for politicians and her life outside of politics.

Biographical note

Mary W. Beazley was born on November 8, 1929, in Athens, Georgia. She attended the Georgia State College for Women and the University of Georgia. Beazley worked as a staffer for Gov. Vandiver, Lt. Gov. Geer, Gov. Maddox, Gov. Carter, Lt. Gov Miller, Carter's presidential campaign and presidential administration, and Gov. Miller.

Scope and Content

Mary Beazley discusses her early life in Athens, Georgia. She recalls moving to Atlanta in 1959 and her first job in the state capitol as a receptionist. She describes the governmental departments housed in the state capitol at that time and her move from the reception desk to Governor Ernest Vandiver's office.

Beazley recalls Vandiver's work in curtailing corruption and desegregating the schools in the University System. She discusses her next job in Lieutenant Governor Peter Zach Geer's office, serving many members of the senate before being asked to join Governor Maddox's staff in 1967. Beazley recalls scheduling Gov. Maddox's People's Days and his failed run for president. She discusses Governor Carter's campaign for president and serving on President Carter's inaugural committee.

Beazley comments on her time working in Bert Lance's office in Washington D.C and discusses her relationship other Georgians such as Jody Powell, Hamilton Jordan, Frank Moore, and Jack Watson. She discusses her time volunteering at the Carter Center and recalls her personal relationships with Jimmy Carter and Zell Miller.

Beazley reflects on ethics in government, female involvement in government, and party politics in Georgia.

Custodial History note

Reflections on Georgia Politics began in the fall of 2006 at Young Harris College, as a lecture and discussion program hosted by Georgia political veteran Bob Short. In late 2007, the Richard B. Russell Library began producing the program as an oral history video series to further illuminate and personalize the tectonic shifts that occurred in Georgia politics in the late twentieth century.
