Clifford H. “Baldy” Baldowski was born on May 27, 1917, in Augusta, Georgia. He was educated at The Citadel and at the Arts Student League in New York. Decorated for service in World War II, he served in the Air Force and Air Force Reserve as a navigator-observer and intelligence office, he retired as colonel. Baldy died in Atlanta on September 27, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Christiansen Baldowski, and three sons, one daughter, and four grandchildren.

A second-generation newspaperman, Baldy began his career as a journalist at the Augusta Chronicle in 1946. After a very brief stint with The Miami Herald, he joined the editorial staff of The Atlanta Constitution in 1950 and worked there until his retirement in 1982. In his tenure with the Constitution, he drew more than 15,000 cartoons, appearing seven days weekly for over thirty years. Baldy was a Pulitzer Prize nominee for his cartoon on U. S. Senator Barry Goldwater's presidential campaign in 1964, and he was awarded the Sigma Delta Chi National Award for Distinguished Service in Journalism for a cartoon reflecting the threat of Southern school closings in the Sixties. He was also awarded four different Freedom Foundation's George Washington Medals for cartoons heralding America’s constitutional freedoms and patriotism. Baldy's cartoons have appeared in Time, U. S. News and World Report, and Newsweek. His work has also been featured in leading dailies across the United States and Canada and in English newspapers in Rome and Paris.
