Collection Description

Biographical Note

Standish Fletcher Thompson was born February 5, 1925, in College Park, Fulton County, Georgia, and attended public schools in East Point, Georgia. In 1943, Thompson served in the United States Army Medical Corps and later served as navigator with the Air Rescue Service in the United States Army Air Corps (1944-1946). Thompson re-enlisted at the onset of the Korean War and served as a pilot with the United States Air Force (1950-1953).

Thompson graduated from Emory University in 1949 and from Woodrow Wilson College of Law in 1957. After admission to the bar in 1958, he started a law practice in East Point. He and his wife Kathryn had two children, Debi and Larry.

In 1964, Thompson, a Republican, was elected to the Georgia General Assembly as the state senator representing District 34. In 1966, he won election to the U.S. Congress from Georgia’s Fifth District and served three terms (1967-1973). In 1972, he ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate, losing to Democrat Sam Nunn.

After leaving politics, Thompson returned to his law practice. In 1985, he was appointed as a member of the Atlanta Regional Commission. He currently resides in Marietta, Georgia.
