Abstract:  The J.B. Fuqua Public Service Papers detail the political career of self-made businessman and philanthropist, J.B. Fuqua. Fuqua was born and raised in Prince Edward County, Virginia before settling in Augusta, Georgia with his family. His primary business was ownership of WJBF television and radio stations. Fuqua became involved with politics in 1957 when he was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives for Richmond County where he served four terms. During his tenure as a politician, Fuqua was responsible for helping Carl Sanders become elected as governor in 1962 and also served as a member of the Democratic National Convention Committee in 1964. The collection includes papers detailing Fuqua’s involvement with the Georgia Democratic Party, photographs, campaign memorabilia, and audiovisual materials.

Abstract:  Betty Bird Foy Sanders met Carl Sanders at the University of Georgia, and they married in 1947. When he entered politics, Betty campaigned with him, and they moved to Atlanta when Carl was elected governor in 1962. Sanders discusses raising two children, helping to develop the new governor's mansion, and entertaining many renowned politicians and business leaders. She also discusses helping to create the Georgia Council of Arts and her love of hats.
