Abstract:  Gwendolyn Ingram O’Looney grew up on St. Simon’s Island, graduated from the University of Georgia, and has worked in human service positions throughout her career. In this follow-up interview, O’Looney discusses more specifically the initiatives relating to solid waste management, water management, and economic development that she coordinated during her terms in office as mayor of Athens-Clarke County. She also discusses the partnership created between the city-county government and the University of Georgia, the improvement of transportation infrastructure, and the redevelopment of East Athens.

Abstract:  Gwendolyn Ingram O’Looney grew up on St. Simon’s Island, graduated from the University of Georgia, and has worked in human service positions throughout her career. In this interview, she talks about her public service career in local politics, as a city council member and two-term mayor of Athens-Clarke County. She describes issues affecting Athens during the 1980s, as well as the race relations and women and minority representation at the time. O’Looney discusses the city-county unification process that created Athens-Clarke County, its ramifications, and her involvement in carrying out consolidation in her role as mayor.

Abstract:  The Athens-Clarke County (Georgia) Unification Files document the dissolution of the governments of the city of Athens and Clarke County and the creation of a new consolidated government known as Athens-Clarke County on January 14, 1991. Documented to a lesser degree is Paul Hardy, University of Georgia Carl Vincent Institute of Government professor and attorney, and his role in the unification process and drafting of the final charter. The files consist of correspondence and memos, charter drafts and summary reports, commission meeting agendas and minutes, research materials, legal and financial information, organization charts, maps, clippings, and advertising materials.

Abstract:  The Talmadge C. DuVall Papers is comprised of papers, photographs, and audiovisual materials which document the career of Tal DuVall as an extension agent and then later on as a director for the Cooperative Extension Service at the University of Georgia. The papers also document his career as a Commissioner for the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government. DuVall became a part of the Cooperative Extension Service in 1956 as a county agent for Carrollton, Georgia. In 1965, he became the county agent for Clarke County and eventually rose to the position of district and then university extension agent. This collection is comprised of papers, photographs, and audiovisual material related to DuVall’s careers in Cooperative Extension and the Athens-Clarke County Unification Commission.

Abstract:  The Athens League of Women Voters (ALWV) Records consist of meeting minutes, agendas, correspondence, clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, and membership information documenting league activities from 1940 to 2006. Other files in this collection include publications such as annual political directories listing public officials and municipal services in the Athens-Clarke County area. The collection also has materials studied by the league regarding local, state, and national issues, including action studies, political studies, documents related to pending legislation, as well ass voter education information and candidate questionnaires. Also included are files from the League of Women Voters of Georgia, the National League, and other regional leagues.
