Collection Title:  Erwin C. Surrency Collection of Political Materials

Abstract:  The Erwin C. Surrency Collection of Political Materials consists of political campaign materials collected by Surrency over the course of his career as law librarian and professor at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and, later at the University of Georgia. It covers the years 1946-1964 and includes printed materials, handbooks, press releases, news clippings, bumper stickers, buttons, and pamphlets. Materials document Democratic and Republican Party campaigns at the national level and the Pennsylvania state or local level including Adlai Stevenson's 1952 presidential campaign and the 1964 "Republicans for Johnson" presidential campaign. Georgia national and state materials mainly pertain to Mrs. Jesse W. Jenkins' 1950 gubernatorial campaign. Also includes AFL-CIO political education materials (1950-1954, 1964).

Abstract:  In 1995, Jack Barnette and his son Mark Barnette engaged John Ehrlichman, White House Counsel on Domestic Affairs to President Richard Nixon, to collaborate with them on a film project to tell the inside story of those working in the White House during the Watergate scandal that ultimately brought down the Nixon presidency. The project culminated in long and short versions of the video documentary In the Eye of the Storm, hosted by author Tom Clancy, the video production An Evening with Ehrlichman at London University, and video footage of Bob Woodward’s interview of Ehrlichman. This collection consists of production files, interview transcripts, Ehrlichman’s files related to the film, depositions from John and Maureen Dean v. St. Martin’s Press, and stills and footage contracts.

Nearly half of Series V. Audiovisual is comprised of video-recorded depositions from John and Maureen Dean v. St. Martin's Press, a lawsuit brought by the Deans over Len Colodny's book on Watergate, Silent Coup. The remainder of the series includes production media for In the Eye of the Storm, comprised of original interviews with people involved in the Watergate scandal, an interview with John Ehrlichman by Bob Woodward, interviews with Ehrlichman by Tom Clancy, the London production An Evening with John Ehrlichman, the Boca Raton, Florida production Watergate Revisited, footage of Tom Clancy's narration, video transfers of John Ehrlichman's home movies, soundtrack and score media, and footage purchased from NARA and other sources.

Abstract:  Ten typed, signed letters to constituent, Mrs. Gerald T. (Elizabeth) Massie of Tucker, Georgia, from Georgia politicians: Senator Richard B. Russell, Senator Herman E. Talmadge, and Governor Carl Sanders. Content of the letters includes several topics, such as: desegregation, the 1964 Presidential Election, and the "Great Society."

Abstract:  The collection is comprised of papers related to George D. Bennett, farmer and politician from Jackson County, Georgia. Bennett was an active particiant in local politics and he held several positions in Clarke County, Jackson County, and Oglethorpe County. The papers in this collection document his role as a local politician and farmer. Papers include correspondence from various citizens encouraging Bennett to run for State Legislature, letters from members of the Love Lodge Masons, and printed material including a speech made by Hoke Smith in 1906 and the Child Labor Bill.

Abstract:  The Georgia House of Representatives Communications Office, previously known as the Georgia House Public Information Office, provides media credentials and workspace for journalists who cover the Georgia House of Representatives. The Director of Media Relations for House Communications, under the direction of the Director of Media Services, supervises the Communications staff to facilitate the coverage by reporters of legislative activity. The staff provides bill texts and reports of pending legislation and disseminates press releases and calendars of business to accredited reporters. In addition, the office maintains taped excerpts from floor debates and online daily activity feeds. The majority of the collection consists of audio recordings (see separate AV finding aid) documenting the regular and special sessions of the Georgia House of Representatives, as well as some Senate proceedings, and photographs maintained by the House photographer. This collection includes biographical sketches of legislators, legislative reports, speeches, research materials, press releases, slide show scripts, audiovisual materials and photographs.

Abstract:  Georgia House of Representatives Communications House Records, Series VIII. Audiovisual Materials includes two compact discs, 1,284 audiocassettes, 236 digital audio tapes (DAT), 603 quarter-inch open reel audio tapes, and 66 VHS videocassettes, documenting the regular and special sessions of the Georgia House of Representatives, as well as some Senate proceedings. The audio reels primarily document the daily activities on the floor of the House during regular and special sessions from 1975 to 1998. The audio cassettes, from 1974 to 2004, focus more extensively on budget hearings and committee meetings, most notably those of the Appropriations Committee.
