The materials document Deen's personal interests, his writing career, touch briefly on his tenure on the Georgia Court of Appeals and his actitivites as Carl Sanders' campaign manager (8th district) during the 1962 gubernatorial election, but mainly focus on Deen's interest in scientific creationism. Abstract:  Record Group A: State Senate Files were generated while Don Johnson served in the Georgia General Assembly as a Senator from 1987 to 1993. The General Files include materials that assisted Johnson with monitoring legislative issues, researching and writing legislation, developing legislative initiatives, as well as observing local issues. Included are files relating to the Intra County Telephone Toll Bill, Johnson’s work on the Appropriations and Reapportionment Committees, the Export Study Commission, and the Hobbs Act. The Issue files contain correspondence, newspaper clippings, printed materials, reports, maps and bills. These were issues of particular interest to Johnson which included human resources, taxation and transportation. The Campaign series contains material relating to Johnson’s campaign in 1987 to fill the seat of the late Parks Brown and his subsequent races in 1988, 1990, and 1992.

Abstract:  The collection consists of congressional papers of Charles F. Hatcher from 1981-1992. Includes legislative files containing correspondence, clippings, reports, speeches, printed materials, newsletters, memoranda, voting records, and subject files relating to abortion, the Clarence Thomas nomination, national health care, the Persian Gulf War, wetlands, and the 1990 Farm Bill; press files containing clippings, press releases, speeches, and event files; constituent services containing correspondence documenting public interest on topics before Congress; and personal files containing correspondence, invitations, thank-yous, guest and appointment books.

Abstract:  Eugene McCarthy served in both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate before making a run for the presidency in 1967. McCarthy ran as a liberal Democrat; he was very opposed to the war in Vietnam, but was defeated by Hubert Humphrey in the primary. The Clarke County (Ga.) McCarthy for President Organization was formed to promote Eugene McCarthy in the 1968 presidential election. Robert Griffith and Phinizy Spalding, two McCarthy campaign workers from Georgia and University of Georgia history professors, donated this collection, which consists of correspondence, speeches, news clippings, political ephemera, and notes reflecting their work and support for McCarthy’s presidential campaign.

Abstract:  Reverend Clifford Hodges Brewton served as press aide to Lester Maddox during his terms as governor and lieutenant governor of Georgia. This collection contains materials Brewton compiled in order to write a book (never published) about Governor Maddox. The scope of the collection covers both the gubernatorial (1967-1971) and the lieutenant governor (1971-1975) administrations of Maddox including the campaigns for each office as well as his 1968 bid for the U.S. presidency. The collection includes press releases, speeches, research materials, clippings, magazine articles, photographs, audiocassettes, and ¼-inch audiotapes.
